Monday night football saw the Molineux under the floodlights with a clash between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest. Recent form from both sides made the occasion unpredictable as new Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has rejuvenated the form that Gary O’Neil had been lacking. For Nottingham Forest, it would be their sixth consecutive win in the top flight surpassing a record set by Forest icon Brian Clough.
Forest asserted control in the early stages. Former Wolves player Morgan Gibbs-White suppressed home supporters’ jeers in the 7th minute after Elliot Anderson initiated a counter attack leading to the visitors opening goal. England manager Thomas Tuchel was in attendance overseeing performances. Gibbs-White’s goal captured attention, improving his chances of being selected for future England camps. The majority of the first half saw Wolves in control threatening a comeback. Jorgen Strand Larsen had multiple big chances denied by magnificent saves from goalkeeper Matz Sels. Forest’s offensive pride stems from counter attacking football. Preceding halftime, Nottingham Forest exploited their counter attacking prowess through a fleeting run of Callum Hudson-Odoi who picked a perfect pass into Chris Wood making it 0-2 before the break.
The second half of the game was made forcibly more compact by the visitors. Nicolas Dominguez was substituted off the pitch in the 60th minute for Morato. This tactical change saw Nottingham Forest deploy a back 5 consolidating the comfortable lead they possessed. No clear chances were made onward from Forest’s tactical change. The away team finished off a clinical performance with Taiwo Awoniyi’s first goal of the season securing 3 goals and 3 points. Overall Wolverhampton Wanderers were unlucky to lose the game largely contrasting the scoreline. Despite the loss, Vitor Pereira’s side will take the offensive positives as his side looked threatening whilst deprived of talismanic Cunha.
